Congenital hydrocephalus is present at birth and may be caused by either environmental influences during fetal development or genetic predisposition. Acquired hydrocephalus develops at the time of birth or at some point afterward. This type of hydrocephalus can affect individuals of all ages and may be caused by injury or disease.

H Y D R O C E P H A L U S in infancy and childhood is a pathologic state characterized by an increased volume of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) under increased pressure, most com- monly due to an obstruction ir/ the circula- tion of this fluid.   Chronic hydrocephalus is a complex condition, the incidence of which increases with increasing age. It is characterised by the presence of ventricular enlargement in the absence of significant.

I was diagnosed with hydrocephalus at the age of 7 years old and had my first shunt on Aug Doctors told me I was going to live with a shunt for the rest of my life but Aug. 20th is the 10th anniversary of being shunt free! This review attempts to explain the relevance of a classification scheme based on the point of obstruction to the flow of cerebrospinal fluid to basic science research into the pathophysiology and effects of hydrocephalus. The review is designed to give examples of the value of this classification in analyzing research utilizing animal models.
